Dr Wiehann Steyn

Programme Manager – Crop Production

close

info:

PhD (Agric) (Stellenbosch)
Hortgro Science manages grower-funded research for the pome and stone fruit industries of South Africa. I oversee the Crop Production research programme, which is structured into seven research themes, viz. Reproductive Biology, Growing Season Climate, Dormancy, Irrigation and Nutrition, Rootstocks, Soil Health and Farming Efficiency.
The ca. 30 research projects in the programme fall within the subject fields of preharvest Horticultural Science and Soil Science, but some of the multidisciplinary projects also involve Entomology, Plant Pathology and Agricultural Economics. The research, both basic and applied in nature, is aimed at maintaining the long-term sustainability of pome and stone fruit growers in South Africa.

My own research at the University of Stellenbosch, where I have an extraordinary appointment within the Department of Horticultural Science, focusses on plant-climate interactions, fruit pigmentation, orchard mechanization and consumer preference for apple and pear taste and appearance. Apart from training postgraduate students, I also teach a final year module on Applied Plant Physiology and Tree Architecture.
